On 30 September, at EIA University (Colombia), during the weekly meeting of the Research Seminar on New Energy Business Models we had the opportunity to play Watts the Deal? The P2P Energy Trading Game. Below we have summarised some key takeaways from playing the game:
This was the first time the game was played in a research seminar at EIA. Students were able to experience first-hand, through a practical activity, how a peer-to-peer energy trading system would work and which benefits and barriers could arise from exchanging energy with their friends, colleagues, and neighbours.
Likewise, while they were just introduced to the game, the students quickly adapted to its dynamics. Initially, they played the game in its most basic configuration (Version 1) and were advised and guided through it. In the second round (Version2), more variables were included, such as personalities and the opportunity to acquire more solar panels or a larger battery. Here, the students played the game without supervision, indicating their adaptability and proving the intuitive nature of Watts the Deal?
There were also some interesting questions and comments during both rounds. Students made suggestions to improve the game options, such as including energy subsidy schemes, energy auctions, energy storage costs, among others. Interestingly, the first observations that were made were related to how appealing and engaging it would be if the game would be adopted to the Colombian context.
It was great to see that all participants in the game session were female students showing that the interest in alternative energy business models becomes more diverse and hopefully, part of the first step to increase female participation in the energy systems of the future.

El jueves 30 de septiembre, en la Universidad EIA (Colombia), en el espacio de trabajo del Semillero de Investigación de Nuevo Modelos de Negocio en Energía Sostenible, Distribuida e Inteligente tuvimos la oportunidad de jugar Watts the Deal? Algunos de los aspectos más importantes de este ejercicio fueron los siguientes:
Es la primera vez que se desarrolla este juego en un semillero de investigación sobre la adopción de nuevos modelos energéticos. En este sentido, los estudiantes pudieron ver de primera mano, a través de una actividad práctica, como funcionaría un sistema energético en el cual pueden intercambiar energía con sus amigos, colegas y vecinos.
De igual forma, a pesar de que apenas fueron introducidos al juego, los estudiantes se adaptaron rápidamente a la dinámica del mismo. Inicialmente se usó la configuración más básica, donde se asesoró a los estudiantes para que desarrollaran el juego de forma correcta. En la segunda ronda, se incluyeron más variables, como las personalidades y la oportunidad de adquirir más paneles solares. Acá los estudiantes desarrollaron el juego sin supervisión, lo que indica su adaptabilidad y la claridad con la que el juego se explicó.
Es importante también resaltar que durante las dos rondas del juego surgieron preguntas y comentarios bien llamativos. Los estudiantes hicieron sugerencias sobre las opciones que ofrecía el juego, esquemas de subsidios, subastas en las ventas de energía, entre otros. Igualmente, de forma interesante, las primeras observaciones que se realizaron se relacionaron con lo atrapante que sería el juego si se adoptará al contexto colombiano.
Finalmente, en una nota aparte, es relevante mencionar que todas los participantes del juego fueron mujeres. Esta es una señal importante del creciente interés por el tema y, con suerte, parte de los primeros pasos para aumentar la participación de estas en los sistemas energéticos del futuro.
